Australian Pet Ownership Snapshot - What does the data say?

Pet ownership is a rapidly growing trend in Australia, and with it, the demand for pet supplies has also increased. According to Animal Medicines Australia, more than two-thirds of Australian households now own a pet. This increase in pet ownership is a multi-faceted phenomenon, however, one of the primary forces behind this trend is the result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The RSPCA Knowledge Base outlines several common benefits that pet ownership can provide, such as companionship, wellbeing, socialisation and improvements to physical health.

A study recently published in PLOS ONE revealed that pets served as a source of comfort and companionship for many Australian families during the COVID pandemic and lockdown. The research, conducted by Dr Shannon Bennetts and her team from La Trobe University’s Judith Lumley Centre, found that anxious children had a stronger bond with their pets. The team's findings were also published in the journal Anthrozoös in March.

The survey, which was conducted between July 29 and October 29, 2020, involved 1,034 parents who lived with a child under 18 years old and a cat or dog. The results showed that one in five families acquired a new pet during the pandemic to help with family wellbeing. Parents reported various benefits of having a pet, including companionship, routine, and a welcome distraction. However, they also reported challenges in managing pet-child interactions, dealing with pets disrupting work and schooling, and worries about accessing care and supplies, as well as their pets' health and longevity.

In this blog post, we will outline the major pet supplies retailers in Australia and explain how Pooch Treats is leading the way in providing the largest range of nutritious, delicious and dog treats dog treats, available at all major pet supply retailers.
